The Fort St. John Housing Solutions Initiative will be getting support from the City, after they received $294,500 from the Northern Healthy Communities Fund (NHCF) for the project.
Through the development of a Housing First model the project plans to address local housing challenges, supporting those who are experiencing homelessness or those who find themselves at risk of losing their housing.
Local organizations are working with the City to develop practical solutions for the residents who are struggling to find stable housing, as the region’s growth brings new jobs and investments which put pressure on services, housing, and infrastructure according to the release.
The primary focus of the Fort St. John Housing Solutions Initiative will be helping individuals move into permanent housing, and once they have a roof over their heads, the individual will receive support which is based off their personal needs.
The City stated in a release, that the goal of this is to build a system that works for the North Peace, which reflects the realities of our community.
“This funding helps us take action on a serious issue,” said Mayor Lilia Hansen. “We know that housing is a foundation for health and well-being. This initiative ensures people in Fort St. John have the support they need to stay housed and move forward.”
Northern Development Initiatives Trust (NDIT) is an independent non-profit corporation established by BC to stimulate economic growth through investments in community-led, grassroots projects, and administers the NHCF according to the release.
The Fort St. John Housing Solutions Initiative plans to focus on testing a small pilot project, building partnerships, and long-term solution planning over the next three years. The City works with consultants, community organizations, and other partners to do the work and for design.
