The skies over North Peace came alive on August 2nd and 3rd as the Fort St. John International Airshow brought thrilling aerobatics and powerful engines roaring back to the region.

From jaw-dropping stunts to family-friendly activities on the ground, the event once again captured the spirit of community and excitement that has made it a highlight of the summer season.

The event featured worldclass performances from the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, Undaunted Airshows, the Skyhawks Military Parachute Team, Yellow Thunder, Go EZ Aerobatics and the Erickson Aircraft Collection.

Captain Brendan Pellow, who flies the 4th Snowbird for the Canadian military aerobatics team, met with the Alaska Highway News while the legendary group were recently in the Peace.

“I’ve been watching the Snowbirds since I can remember, so being able to wear this red flight suit and continue on the Canadian legacy is huge,” said Captain Pellow.

When asked how it felt to fly among such a legendary group in tight formation(s) he said, “It’s nerve wracking in the sense that you have to be heightened at all times, there’s no time to have your brain wander. It also instills a lot of confidence in my team around me and what we’re doing to know that everybody is in the position they need to be in to continue the safety of everyone.”

“Being in smaller towns is great, we have more time and availability to interact with the locals. We’ve just come from Alberta, up in Edmonton and Camrose before coming to Fort St. John, and we have been on the road since early June.”

When eyes weren’t looking up, there were various food vendors and sponsor tents to visit in between performances including MLA Jordan Kealy’s, where he was handing out water and talking with members of the community.

“I’m proud to see the airshow comeback and I appreciate all the work that our local organizers and volunteers put in to make it happen,” said MLA Jordan Kealy on a Facebook post. Kealy said he had a chance to meet some of the amazing pilots, technicians, staff, volunteers, and organizers a night before the show.

Formed in 2009, the Fort St. John International Air Show Society set out with a clear mission according to their website, to create an air show that is exciting, interactive, and truly memorable.

Unique in Northern B.C., the air show draws large crowds and offers an amazing opportunity to shine a spotlight on Fort St. John and the surrounding region.

From barrel rolls to tight formations, the airshow delivered a burst of speed, skill, and summer excitement.
