Students from North Peace Secondary had an interesting opportunity to look a little further down the road earlier this month, during the 10th annual Grow Our Own career exploration event.

This annual event took place on March 3 at The Lido Theatre in Fort St. John, acting as a conduit for students to connect with local professionals representing a variety of careers.

Organizers said the students had to pre-select six mentors they wanted to sit down with, granting a 15-minute session with each which gave students a resourceful opportunity to ask questions regarding daily work life, required education, and potential salaries and benefits in each field.

Local mentors and career representatives volunteered their time for the event, which aimed to help young people explore career options and encourage them to return to the community after completing their training.

“Mentors and companies donate their time for this outstanding community event for youth to have a look into potential career paths with the hopes that the students go away for their professional training, then come back to their hometown to practice their much needed skills,” said event organizer Jeff Mayer from School District 60.

Events like Grow Our Own continue to give students a chance to ask questions, make connections, and start thinking about the many career paths available to them, both close to home and beyond.
