Something to smile about

Smile Cookies have returned to the Peace with the annual campaign running from April 27 to May 3 at Tim Horton’s locations across the community.

100 per cent of the proceeds from every Smile Cookie sold locally go directly to the FSJ Hospital Foundation, which helps fund healthcare equipment and services in the North Peace.

The annual campaign continues to be a strong local fundraiser, and last year more than 16,000 cookies were sold which raised over $32,000 for the foundation.

This year’s effort is now over, with early numbers starting to come in with close to 10,000 cookies being sold before the weekend. Organizers encouraged residents to stop in and take part, whether it was picking up a cookie with a coffee or placing a larger order for the workplace.

The Smile Cookie campaign itself has been around for decades, with the first one being held in 1996 which raised money for a children’s hospital in Hamilton. Since the inception, this initiative has grown into a much larger effort as it raised more than $150 million in total for charities and community groups selected by local restaurant owners across our nation.

Last year alone the campaign brought in $22.6 million according to the campaign’s website, supporting more than 600 organizations across Canada and the United States including hospitals, food banks, schools, and other community groups.

Locally, that support stays close to home, something that continues to make the campaign successful year after year.
