February 16, 1955 – May 6, 2025

Kathy Kay McKnight, age 70, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Kathy was born on February 16, 1955, in Miles City, Montana, to David Fraser Jr. and Ellen June Fraser. Her early life was marked by both movement and loss. After her father’s unexpected death when she was 12, Kathy and her mother relocated to Sheridan, Wyoming, where her mother pursued a degree in education—an experience that would shape Kathy’s own calling as a teacher.

She graduated high school in Spearfish, South Dakota, where she met her future husband, Wesley Ernest McKnight. Kathy and Wes were married on August 13, 1976, shortly after earning their degrees from Black Hills State College. Kathy received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a minor in Psychology. She later earned a Master of Arts in Leadership and Administration from Gonzaga University.

In 1978, Kathy and Wes moved to a cattle ranch near Fort St. John, British Columbia, where they raised their three sons: David, Justin, and Brett. Alongside ranching, Kathy built a distinguished career in education. She taught primarily at Charlie Lake Elementary from 1988 to 2018, and also served as a Faculty Associate for AHCOTE through Simon Fraser University, mentoring future teachers from 2006 to 2011. After retirement, she was frequently called back to support high-needs classrooms—a testament to her skill, compassion, and unwavering dedication to children.

Kathy was known for her no-nonsense teaching style infused with warmth and humor. Her classroom was a place of structure, love, and belonging, especially for students who needed extra support. Her impact as an educator spanned generations, and her students often lined up for hugs at the end of the day.

Despite losing both of her parents by the age of 19, Kathy lived a life rooted in love, resilience, and purpose. She was the rock of her family, offering strength, wisdom, and boundless care. She gave selflessly—whether through emotional support, a helping hand, or her signature handmade quilts. Her intelligence, humor, and love of learning were traits she passed on to her children and grandchildren.

Kathy is survived by her beloved husband of nearly 49 years, Wes McKnight; her sons David (Fria Gordo), Justin, and Brett (Lois Gardiner); granddaughters Grace Ellen and Alexa Gwen; her brother Danny Lee Fraser (Jandee May); and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, David and Ellen June Fraser; and brothers Dennis and David “Larry” Fraser.

Kathy will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for her compassion, strength, and the beautiful life she built with those she loved.
