A Mural Mentorship Program designed to improve the local arts community has been launched by the City and local Artist in Residence Francine Freeman, announced by the City on August 20.

“This partnership is a shining example of community collaboration,” said Stephanie Peters, Manager of Economic Development for the City. “We’re grateful for the support of our partners and proud to foster a creative environment that makes Fort St. John a vibrant place to live, work, and play.”

Three local artists have been selected for the program according to a media release from the City, which offers the opportunity to be a part of creating large scale public art in the heart of Fort St. John.

Local artists Barb D., Simone O., and Sophie S. will gain practical experience including safety planning, installation logistics, and municipal permitting during this program.

Braun’s Flooring has donated the paint for this initiative, which will allow the artists to create a 60-foot mural downtown.

Drop-in sessions for youth aged 10 – 18 are being offered through the program as well, giving participants the opportunity to meet the artists and learn about mural making before contributing to the final artwork.

Interested individuals are encouraged to register and email: arts-culture@fortstjohn.ca early due to limited space and varying times.
