The City of Fort St. John became aware of an unauthorized access by a third party to a section of their network on February 25, 2025, which resulted in the encryption of certain data. The City swiftly brought in cybersecurity experts to help with containment, remediation, and to carry out a forensic investigation In response.
The City said that although the investigation will require time to finish, their priority is to safeguard the information under their care while restoring operations as quickly and securely as possible in a media release.
In the early stages of the investigation, they discovered evidence indicating that a small portion of their data was taken by the unauthorized third party during the incident.
The City is currently in the process of reviewing and validating the data involved to assess whether any sensitive personal information has been compromised. If it is confirmed that sensitive information has been affected through the investigation, they will promptly notify those impacted.
As the City collaborates with the relevant authorities and the investigation progresses, they must remain cautious about the information they share according to the release.
The City is actively working to bring operations back online securely with more than 75% of front-facing services having been restored, while the remaining services are expected to be online in the coming days.
