Plenty to see at the Men’s Shed block party
There was no shortage of people, cars or conversation along 101 Avenue last Saturday afternoon, as the Fort St. John Men’s Shed held its first block party and gave people another reason to spend a little time downtown.
The Sept. 19 event took over 101 Avenue between 104 Street and 106 Street, with the road closed for the afternoon while people wandered between vehicles, activities, local businesses and the Men’s Shed yard sale.
The Fort St. John Classic Cruisers were there with a head turning collection of vehicles, drawing people up and down the block for a closer look, while kids had activities of their own and plenty of people simply stopped to visit as they moved through the crowd.
Local MLA Jordan Kealy was kept busy working the grill for part of the afternoon, while Mayor Lilia Hansen could be seen making her way through the event, stopping to say hello and talk with people along the way.
“What a fantastic day down at the Men’s Shed Block Party!” Hansen posted online. “Lots of people checking out all the great booths, BBQ, Dunk Tank, Classic Vehicle show, and watching the kids bounce their hearts out on the bouncy toys. Such an awesome community vibe - laughter, music, and neighbours catching up everywhere you look.”
The block party also gave the Men’s Shed another chance to put itself in front of the community. The idea behind the Men’s Shed organization is fairly simple, give men a place to work on projects, share skills, spend time around other people and stay connected to their community.
Earlier this year, the local Men’s Shed also received $11,735 from 100 Women Who Care Fort St. John, giving the still relatively young organization another boost as it continues building its presence around the North Peace.
By the end of the afternoon there were people checking out the cars, digging through the sale, bringing the kids through and stopping for plenty of little conversations along the way, which was probably about as good a way as any to wrap up the Men’s Shed’s first block party.
