Emergency services were called to an area near the high school in Fort St. John early this morning following reports of gunshots.

Witnesses report an ambulance arriving around 3:30 a.m., with one person transported to hospital. Early, unconfirmed reports suggested the incident involved a shooting and a black Ford vehicle.

In an update, Fort St. John RCMP say the incident occurred at approximately 3:15 a.m. in the 9700 block of 86th Street. Police conducted a traffic stop involving a black Ford truck believed to be connected to criminal activity in the city.

According to RCMP, two individuals were inside the vehicle at the time. During the interaction, one of the males required medical attention, prompting BC Ambulance Service to attend and transport him to hospital.

A nearby resident told Alaska Highway News that shots were fired approximately 20 feet from their home, where five children were asleep at the time.

"The Fort St John RCMP are currently on scene at 97th Avenue and 86th Street to investigate a serious incident that took place at approximately 3:15 AM," said Cpl Shawn Ingham Fort St. John RCMP.

The investigation remains in its early stages. Police are asking anyone who may have been in the area around the time of the incident to check dash camera or cellphone footage and come forward with any information.
