I am pleased to hear that the BC Government has essentially shut down any opportunity for future cryptocurrency mining operations from connecting to the BC Hydro grid. There has been a temporary halt to new projects for the last few years, but now that has been made permanent. I have previously ranted on the madness of anything to do with crypto, so I will spare you those details now. Suffice to say that thankfully, not one more additional kilowatt of Site C power will be wasted on crypto mining.

My negative feelings towards crypto only deepened when I heard that the Trump family had started their own cryptocurrency. So, I asked the AI Search Assist on my computer about that situation, and it said this:

“Yes, Donald Trump launched a cryptocurrency called $Trump just days before his inauguration as president on January 17, 2025. This meme coin quickly gained significant value and has been associated with his business ventures during his presidency. The launch has faced criticism for potential conflicts of interest, as Trump promoted the coin while in office. Critics argue that this venture blurs the lines between business and politics, raising ethical concerns about profiting from the presidency.” Yeah, well that is pretty much how he operates with impunity thanks to a Republican Party that refuses to rein him in.

Search Assist also noted that “Donald Trump previously referred to cryptocurrency as a "scam" and expressed skepticism about its value.” I would guess that it was the “scam” part that eventually attracted him.

It is interesting that the main reason given by the BC Government for this move was the lack of jobs and long-term economic gains that are provided by crypto mining operations, but there is one more reason that I feel should ‘trump’ all others: How about the moral obligation to avoid the enormous waste of electricity for something that has no useful purpose in a real world? Anyway, I am just glad they made what I feel is a good decision.
