Gunshots on 96 Avenue have RCMP looking for answers

A Saturday morning in one Fort St. John neighbourhood started with the sound of gunfire.

Fort St. John RCMP were called to the 10000 block of 96 Avenue around 7:25 a.m. on Oct. 24, after people living in the area reported hearing several shots.

Police say their early investigation shows the shots were fired at a residence.

No one was hurt, and at this point, RCMP are still trying to figure out who was responsible.

“Discharging firearms in a residential neighbourhood puts innocent residents and families at significant risk,” said Cpl. Brett Urano, Media Relations Officer for the BC RCMP. “While we are fortunate no one was injured, the potential for a tragic outcome cannot be understated.

“Our officers are working diligently to identify those responsible and hold them accountable. We take these incidents extremely seriously and remain committed to maintaining public safety and ensuring those who engage in this type of violence are brought before the courts.”

With the investigation still in its early stages, police are asking anyone who was around 96 Avenue that morning to think back to anything unusual they may have seen.

That includes anyone with surveillance footage from their home or business, or dash camera video from around the time the shots were reported.

Anyone with information can call the Fort St. John RCMP at 250-787-8100, and those who would rather remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
