The Fire and Safety Self-Assessment Program is designed to improve fire safety practices and safety measures for local businesses. This initiative highlights the City's dedication to proactive fire prevention and adherence to BC Fire Code regulations.
The Fire and Safety Self-Assessment Program is intended to enable business owners and property managers to perform regular fire inspections independently according to a media release from the City of Fort St. John on September 9.
Property owners or their designated representatives are responsible for the assessments, according to the BC Fire Code.
The program offers a well-organized framework for businesses to review their fire safety procedures, including emergency exits, the accessibility of fire extinguishers, and electrical safety.
"Ensuring the safety of our community members and businesses is a top priority. By launching this self-assessment program, we are equipping local businesses with the tools and resources necessary to maintain a safe environment for everyone," stated Mayor Lilia Hansen in a media release.
Director of Public Safety and Fire Chief Robert Norton highlighted the critical role of regular fire inspections, whether they are carried out by the Fire Prevention Branch or through self-assessment. "The Fire and Life Safety Self-Assessment Program is not just about compliance; it's about proactive risk management. By conducting these assessments, businesses contribute directly to the safety and well-being of their employees, customers, and property.”
The City of Fort St. John Fire Department maintains a routine of inspecting all commercial properties at least once every three years. In the years between these formal inspections, businesses are required to complete the Fire and Life Safety Self-Assessment.
