The 2024 FireSmart campaign was launched by the Peace River Regional District (PRRD) earlier this month for homeowners in rural electoral areas. The initiative aims to educate the public and assist residents in protecting their properties and communities from wildfires.

The Peace River region faces a unique wildfire risk due to strong winds, prolonged drought levels, and the intersection of wildlands and urban environments according to the PRRD’s website. Residents in rural electoral areas are encouraged to schedule a free and confidential FireSmart Home Ignition Consultation with Mammoth Forestry.

“The FireSmart program is invaluable to our community. It empowers residents to take proactive steps in protecting their homes and loved ones from the increasing threat of wildfires. By participating in this program, we are strengthening our regional resilience and ensuring the safety and well-being of our communities. We are also excited to offer additional support for seniors and people with mobility considerations this year, as these members of our community require extra care,” said PRRD Chair Brad Sperling.

The FireSmart campaign underscores the importance of consistently implementing small, proactive changes throughout the year to prepare properties for wildfires. These measures are crucial in mitigating potential property loss. By encouraging ongoing preparedness, FireSmart aims to significantly minimize the impact of wildfires on communities and their environments.

To schedule a consultation, please fill out the online form on the PRRD’s website or contact Mammoth Forestry directly at (250) 467-4180.
