Cars, cones and a Sunday in the North Peace

The Peace Region Motorsports Association brought AutoX racing back to the Home Hardware parking lot recently, giving local drivers a chance to test themselves and their vehicles on a cone-lined course in Fort St. John.
While out making the rounds that Sunday morning, the Alaska Highway News spotted a parking lot full of pylons, cars and spectators gathered around what turned out to be another PRMA AutoX event, making it well worth pulling over to see what was happening.
PRMA transformed an ordinary parking lot into a course where drivers tested themselves and their vehicles, while spectators gathered along the edge to watch the action throughout the day.
For anyone who has never seen AutoX before, drivers tackle the course one at a time against the clock, where smooth driving, precision and control can be just as important as speed.
That has always been one of the appealing things about PRMA events. You don't need a dedicated race car or years of experience to take part, with the association welcoming seasoned competitors and people simply looking to experience AutoX for the first time.
Safety is a major part of every event as well, according to organizers. Drivers and passengers wear helmets, seatbelts stay fastened, vehicles complete a self tech inspection before hitting the course, and everyone is expected to follow the direction of event staff and course marshals.
The Peace Region Motorsports Association is a family-friendly group of local motorsports enthusiasts that organizes AutoX and IceX events throughout the Peace Region, giving people a chance to enjoy their vehicles in a safe environment while building a community around the sport.
The Alaska Highway News spent some time watching the runs, visiting with people at the event and taking in another reminder that there is almost always something happening somewhere in the North Peace, even if it starts with nothing more than the sound of squealing tires drifting across a parking lot.
That is one of the better parts of covering a community like this. Some stories are planned days in advance, while others are found simply by taking the time to pull over, grab the camera and see what everyone is up to.
