The SPARK Women’s conference held in Fort St. John in October is something to be very proud of.  The organizers have truly brought a sustainable world class women’s leadership conference to the north!

I was very privileged to be the recipient of a gift of attendance by Sharron Hammond. Sharron is the local Seniors Community Connector. She had a scheduling conflict and graciously gifted her tickets to me!

This gift sparked my courage to say yes to the opportunities put before me and no to allowing me to get in the way of myself. I arrived at the event via the Fort St. John Handidart. The driver graciously brought me in and left me in the registration line.  I quickly discovered the lines were alphabetical. A Sparkler (conference) quickly found me and assisted me through the process. Christine helped me find a table and ensured that she would assist me at the breaks and with anything I may need. She did a wonderful job being my sighted guide. She ensured my physical needs were accommodated. She assisted me with technology accommodations and so much more. Christine even gave me a quick hair and make-up check before my professional headshot was taken.

Day two I arrived early. I shared with a group of fellow keeners my challenges with networking blind. They invited me to sit with them at their table and made sure to include me full heartedly. I have a new conference Yolanda from ESW. This wonderful woman encouraged me to stand-up and share.

I had a very vulnerable moment as the mike came to me. I could not see it. The MC Trish gave me the mike to speak. I shared that three years ago I had a sudden total vision loss. I introduced myself. The exercise was to introduce ourselves, our jobs/roles, and our inspiration.  My introduction went something like this after I explained my sudden blindness. “My name is Edwina; I am currently reimagining myself. I love building community.”

I started to cry. The room stood up and gave me a standing ovation.  There are no words to describe the support I felt coming my way. I realized that I was the one in the way of myself for moving forward.

Upon coming home from the conference there seem to have been many shifts for me. I have had to look after several details from my old life that include retiring my professional designation and saying no to a reappointment to a tribunal that I had been a part of for the past seven years. I have found that there has been great relief in finally putting these parts of my life down. With that relief there has come much inspiration and opportunity coming my way.

Sayin yes to attending a women’s networking leadership conference by myself has helped me set my compass towards the seed planted that day. I have decided to plan an International Women’s Day event on March 8, 2026. I have booked the venue and will soon be gathering a community of women to assist with the details. I hope to have the event fully sponsored with all proceeds going to a local not-for-profit organization. The event will be low barrier so that all women can attend despite any socio-economic barriers..

I plan for the programming to be focused on how I have used tools and resources as well as relationships with the wonderful women of Fort St. John to navigate the challenges life has thrown at me. The theme this year for International Women’s Day is one of sharing knowledge.  I hope to send out an invitation for women of all ages and stages to participate and share their strength and resilience. .
