The local RCMP received a report that James Barnes was missing on October 18. The Fort St. John police believed Barnes had been grouse hunting in the Chetwynd area after an initial investigation.

Chetwynd RCMP were notified the following day as it was believed that Barnes had been hunting in the Chetwynd area.

Barnes and his golden retriever Murphy left home in his grey Chevy pickup, which was later found by the RCMP with his hunting gear and personal belongings.

Through the investigation it was discovered that he had been seen with his dog and his vehicle on Ground Birch Road off the 269 Road on Friday, October 18, 2024, between 11:00 - 11:30 a.m. according to a media release.

Search and Rescue teams were deployed, but all attempts to locate James have so far been unsuccessful. Police are now turning to the public for assistance in advancing the investigation.

A RCMP media release describes James Joseph Edmund Barnes as:

•             Caucasian male

•             28 years old

•             5’ 11 (180 cm)

•             201 lbs (91 kg)

•             Brown hair

•             Brown eyes

•             Big moustache

•             Last seen wearing a green/blue TC Energy ball cap, green or blue hoodie and jeans.

A golden retriever resembling Murphy was discovered in the Halfway River area near Fort St. John. However, DNA testing confirmed that the dog was not Murphy.

If our readers have any information regarding the whereabouts of James Barnes and Murphy or recall seeing them and their vehicle in October, please contact the Chetwynd RCMP at 250-788-9221.
