With cybercrime affecting the North Peace at an increasing rate, the City of Fort St. John will be hosting the Northern Cyber Defence Conference on Thursday, October 23.

The one-day workshop will be taking place at the Pomeroy Hotel and Conference Centre and is designed to equip organizations and individuals with knowledge and tools to help defend, prevent, and recover from cyber-attacks.

National cybersecurity experts will be at the conference including keynote speaker Chris Mathers, as well as city staff with firsthand accounts regarding the City’s February 2025 cyber incident.

“Cybersecurity is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity,” said Milo MacDonald, Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Fort St. John. “Our experience earlier this year was a wake-up call. We’re sharing our story to highlight the risks and show how communities can unite, learn, and emerge stronger.”

This event is open to the public and welcomes anyone who likes to learn about ways to safeguard against cyber threats.

Individuals can hope to learn more about practical cyber preparedness and response strategies with networking opportunities through these experts led sessions.

The Mayor’s Standing Committee on Community Economic Development will be providing breakfast, while lunch is provided by MNP.
