Let’s Talk Official Community Plan launched this month

Updated: Sep 16

The City of Fort St. John is thrilled to introduce the "Let's Talk" engagement process for the Official Community Plan, inviting residents and businesses to contribute to the future development of our city.

As the City of Fort St. John begins to update the Official Community Plan (OCP), they are inviting residents and businesses to participate in this opportunity, shaping how our city grows and develops over the next two decades.

According to a media release, the OCP is a vital guiding document that sets the long-term vision for the city and is shaped by feedback from the community.

This update is a response to the Province of British Columbia's new “Homes for People Action Plan,” which has introduced legislation aimed at broadening housing options throughout the province.

Fort St. John has proactively aligned with these objectives by revising the Zoning Bylaw to permit small-scale, multi-unit housing in areas traditionally designated for single-family homes.

Mayor Lilia Hansen highlighted the crucial role of community engagement in this process. "Our Official Community Plan reflects the community's vision for Fort St. John, and we want to hear from you. Your feedback will help shape how we grow, where we live, and how we create a sustainable and vibrant city for everyone. Whether it's housing, transportation, economic development, or community health, this is your opportunity to make a difference."

The province requires local governments to revise their OCP every five years and plan for anticipated housing needs over the next 20 years.

Fort St. John’s existing plan, last revised in 2017, will be examined to ensure it reflects the community's changing priorities while meeting provincial requirements.

The community is invited to share their views on what they appreciate about living in Fort St. John and suggest ways to enhance the quality of life for everyone.

Throughout the coming year, City staff will interact with the public through various events and online platforms to collect feedback that will help define the goals, objectives, and priorities for the updated OCP.
