A suspect has been charged in relation to the mass-casualty incident that took place in Vancouver late last month.

The Lapu Lapu Day Festival was taking place in Vancouver on April 26th, near East 43rd Avenue and Fraser Street when a suspect drove his SUV into a large crowd of people, killing eleven individuals, aged 5 to 65.

More than two dozen festival goers were also injured when the SUV drove into the crowd, after which witnesses and bystanders intervened to detain the suspect.

"On behalf of Council for the City of Fort St. John, I want to express our heartfelt condolences to the Filipino community and everyone affected by the tragedy at the Lapu Lapu festival in Vancouver. This devastating loss weighs heavily on us, especially in our town where many Filipino families are part of the fabric of our community,” said Fort St. John Mayor Lilia Hansen.

“We stand with you in this time of sorrow, sharing in your grief and honoring the values of resilience and unity that define the Filipino spirit. Please know that our community is here to support and uplift you as you navigate this difficult time.”

Vancouver Police Department’s Major Crime Section is leading the investigation, and a 30-year-old Vancouver man was arrested at the scene.

Kai-Ji Adam Lo, 30, is being charged with eight counts of second degree murder so far and is being held in custody while the charge assessment is ongoing as more charges are anticipated.

“The Province of British Columbia has declared today, Friday, May 2, 2025, to be an official day of remembrance and mourning for the victims of the murderous attack at Lapu Lapu Day in Vancouver,” said Premier David Eby.

“On Saturday, April 26, 2025, a joyous festival in celebration of Filipino culture and history ended with a senseless attack that left 11 dead, many injured and many more traumatized. People around the world join us in mourning the lives lost and the awful toll resulting from the act of a single man.”
